title: "Do Factor Premia Travel? Machine-Learning Factor Timing in Emerging-Market Equities"
slug: em-factor-timing
summary: Out-of-sample study of time variation in equity factor returns across 22 emerging markets (801,536 country-factor-months), developed-to-emerging transfer, and the net value of factor timing after trading costs.
research_question: Is the predictability of equity factor returns documented in developed markets present in emerging markets, and does a model trained on developed-market history forecast emerging-market factor returns out of sample, net of trading costs?
why_it_matters: In multi-country factor panels, testing against each series own historical mean rejects 87.5% of the time under no predictability because pooling noisy means across countries beats unpooled means without any timing ability.

limitations: Evidence is out-of-sample predictive comparison, not causal identification. Factor returns are gross of their own stock-level rebalancing costs and signed by the original studies, so Sharpe levels must be read comparatively. Results depend on factor weighting (equal-weighted factors show positive R2_OS vs shrinkage mean, whereas capped value-weighted factors do not).
